Why is Earth Day celebrated?
Earth Day, which is celebrated on the 22nd of April every year, which serves us as a reminder of the importance of environmental sustainability and conservation. Every year, a new theme is brought up, to raise awareness for sustainability towards a better environment. This years Earth Day theme is “Planet vs Plastics”, which aims to raise awareness about the plastic pollution on our planet. Earth Day should remind not only ourselves, but communities, governments and businesses to take the necessary steps in the right direction to protect the planet.
The importance of sustainability in today’s business world.
In the corporate world of today, sustainability is no longer being seen as “nice-to-have”, rather a strategic necessity. Today, companies are facing pressures to be more socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable, and with constant awareness being raised, companies are becoming up to date with the changes involved in their business to help contribute with this.
The Way Forward
It’s time for each of us to reflect on our actual impact on the planet. Are our actions really making a difference? The realistic answer would be no. 1 person cannot “change the world”, however we can influence the world, and even though the challenges on our planet for sustainability may seem daunting, there are practical steps that everyone can take to help protect the environment and promote sustainability. From small lifestyle changes to larger advocacy efforts, there’s something everyone can do to play a part in preserving our previous Earth for future generations.

๐ Your Food Leftovers
Our leftovers are not just “leftovers”! Instead of disposing of food after a celebration/event with not enough guests, why not get creative with your leftovers. Stale bread can be turned into croutons or breadcrumbs. Pizza crusts can be mixed with hummus for a healthy little snack. Treat “food waste” as ingredients.
๐กReplace Traditional Bulbs
Bulbs with energy-efficient light can be found everywhere. They are almost the same price! This way, you’ll would be saving the earth, your wallet and some valuable energy!
๐Think About The Bus!
We get it… “THE BUS!?!”. Yep, the bus. Think about 20 cars added on the streets making already difficult parking even worse. Now think about those same 20 cars gone, lighter traffic and 20 parking spots gone from the street leading to more space for pedestrians and way less carbon emissions for our planet. The best part about taking the bus in Malta, is that it’s free with your personalized Tal-Linja Card.
๐ฟTry to Eat Less Meat
Yes, that includes fish. Consider plant-based meals to reduce the environmental impact of meat production on the shape of beef, chicken and fish.
๐ง๐ปโ๐งRepair Household Items
You do not always have to spend your hard-earned money on new electronics. If you were smart enough to make that money, you can also be smart enough to at least try to fix your appliances, furniture or electronics instead of replacing them.
๐Recycle Your Batteries
Recycle batteries and similar types of waste in the appropriate places. If you can recycle your organic waste, you can also try to recycle other types of waste.
